Putnam and Vickers' "Standard American Speaker" features a variety of dialogues, poems, musical numbers and other short pieces suitable for recitation at school, home or church. The book highlights the "Delsartean method" of elocution pioneered by François Delsarte to teach people how to speak and sing expressively. The musical numbers in the book were collected and arranged by George Vickers, composer of "Guard the Flag" and "Poems of the Occident," highlighted here as popular songs of the time. Includes illustrations highlighting the Delsartean approach. This copy is in Good condition, with mild wear to the covers and some faint stains. Most inner pages are clean and unmarked, and the binding is firm. 452 pages; approx. 7"x9".
